Ingredients
- Oil
- 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
- 1/2 tsp cumin seeds jeera
- 1/4 tsp asafoetida hing
- 1/2 tsp fenugreek seeds methi
- 1/2 tsp urad dal
- 1/4 tsp fenugreek seeds
- Few curry leaves
- 2-3 green chillies
- 1 onion finely chopped
- 1 tomato finely chopped
- 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
- 1-2 tsp sugar
- Salt to taste
- 1/4 cup water
- 2 cups bread chopped into cubes
- 2-3 tbsp fresh grated coconut
Instructions
- In a pan, heat oil over medium heat.
- Add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Then, add cumin seeds, asafoetida, fenugreek seeds, and urad dal. Sauté for a few seconds until they release their aroma.
- Add the green chilli and curry leaves to the pan. Sauté for a minute until the curry leaves become slightly crispy.
- Add the onions and saute till transparent and add in the tomato and cook till the tomatoes are mushy.
- Now, add turmeric powder, sugar, and salt to the pan. Mix well to coat the ingredients with the spices.
- Pour the water into the pan and mix everything together. Allow it to come to a simmer.
- Add the chopped bread cubes to the pan and mix well, ensuring that the bread is coated with the spice mixture. Adjust the seasoning if needed.
- Continue to cook the bread upma for a few minutes, stirring occasionally, until the bread cubes are well combined with the spices and become slightly crisp.
